It was an early alarm as we had a table in The Station Inn at Ribblehead booked at seven that evening. We parked there overnight, there's no charge for vans if your using the pub.  From there first on our route was Whernside, about two and half miles from the viaduct, the path follows the railway line crossing over it as it starts to rise. Passing a waterfall on your left side the incline increases.  Reaching the top you carry on past the summit cairn the path takes you back down and towards a farm, alot of work has been done to improve the path.  The farm runs a campsite and small cafe doing drinks, snacks and a toilet, pint of orange juice with ice goes down well. Carrying on through towards the main road turn left and past another campsite attached to a pub this time. The footpath is signed just after these. The terrain is a little different on this side of the road. Limestone makes up most of the Dales formed millions of...

Ennerdale - Crike, Cragg Fell and Lank Rigg 9 miles

Image
Our walk starts on Blakeley Raise above Ennerdale Bridge, we parked by the road just past  Kiniside Stone Circle  the footpath to Cragg Fell is about 100 yards along the road. The wooden signpost is on the left leading towards a gate and the plantation, following the track through the trees and up the fell till we reached a stile on the left hand side and a footpath going up to the first summit of the day.  The summit cairn is accompanied by a shelter, very welcome on the day, visibility was low and the wind was picking up. We took advantage and stopped for dinner. The next summit lies in front overlooking Ennerdale water, we set off along the footpath as the clouds came down and the enevitable soaking followed. We arrived at Cragg Fell before the clouds had left giving just brief glimpses of the fells and water, we waiting just past the cairn weighing up our options. The path goes right from the summit leading down the fell...

The Nabb Martindale via Rest Dodd Patterdale and Angle Tarn 10 miles

Start point for this walk is a little car park at the end of Hartsop (donations). Leave the car park via the gate and follow the path for a mile up the fell leading to Hayeswater, nestling between The Knott to the west and Grey Cragg to the east. The climb continues till you cross the path coming from The Knott heading east towards Angle Tarn where we turn left. After 100 yards or so we turn right climbing again towards the top of Rest Dodd. This path is less obvious but easy to follow once your on it. The veiws so far will all of been behind you looking back into Patterdale, stunning they were too. When we reach the summit cairns of Rest Dodd the vista unfolds in front revealing Martindale and beyond.  It's a steep walk down to The Nabb with a peat bog to traverse at the bottom, the day we where there the bog wasn't to bad, we managed to keep our feet dry sticking to the path. Then it's a gentle climb back up to The Nabb fro...

Our walk starts in Horton-in-Ribbledale at the National Park car park, cost is £5 all day, the fell is immediately visible oppostite. Its a short walk after turning right out of the car park to the end of the village taking the 2nd sign for a footpath on the left hand side of the road. Follow the path up past the school and towards the fell. The veiws rewarding the climb come quickly with Whernside and Ingleborough, the two other fells in the Yorshire Three Peaks, being visible. Continuing up the fell. following the stone wall on your left hand side, till you reach the Penine Way where you turn left towards the summit.  The climb now really starts, your path may not be obvious but unfolds as you follow it up the crag, some scrambling may be required but if you managed the stiles so far you'll not be troubled by the crag. It's a short walk to the trig point where there's also a shelter built into the wall.  The return route leads away from the stile on the other side of the ...
