Ennerdale - Crike, Cragg Fell and Lank Rigg 9 miles

Our walk starts on Blakeley Raise above Ennerdale Bridge, we parked by the road just past Kiniside Stone Circle the footpath to Cragg Fell is about 100 yards along the road.

The wooden signpost is on the left leading towards a gate and the plantation, following the track through the trees and up the fell till we reached a stile on the left hand side and a footpath going up to the first summit of the day.

The summit cairn is accompanied by a shelter, very welcome on the day, visibility was low and the wind was picking up. We took advantage and stopped for dinner. The next summit lies in front overlooking Ennerdale water, we set off along the footpath as the clouds came down and the enevitable soaking followed. We arrived at Cragg Fell before the clouds had left giving just brief glimpses of the fells and water, we waiting just past the cairn weighing up our options.

The path goes right from the summit leading down the fell to a stile and the forest track, we'd planned to turn right and head back if the weather hadn't improved but never under estimate the difference dropping down 100 feet or so can make. So we went left then right through a clearing in the tree stumps and towards the next stile, following the wall till the corning then bearing right up to the next ridge. Turning right when we crossed the track towards whoap. That down pour turned out to be the worse of the day and we where drying out nicely in the wind till one of us became unstuck on rock which wasn't as stable as it had looked. They'd been some boggy patches up until this point and they were about to increase, this one was particularly wet.
As you near the top of whoap Lank Rigg lies to the left and a saddle joining the two fells is revealed.

Dropping down onto the saddle the final ascent to the summit of Lank Rigg is straight and steep but the veiws to the coast and back to the fells make up for it.

Next we retrace our steps to the lowest point of the saddle and turn left and head down the valley following whoap beck.

There are a couple of ford's to cross to keep the walk interesting,

before the path heads up between the hills to meet the road. Turn right here and follow the road back to the start.
